Immersive exhibitions are a fun and dynamic way for families to explore an artist’s works.
These experiences can be more engaging than traditional gallery settings. Kids can discover the mood and colours of famous paintings, while older children and parents can learn more about the art and the artist.
Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience has attractions suitable for all ages, including a 360° digital show, VR experience, and the opportunity to create your own artwork.
In the following article, we’re going to take a look at an honest, in-person review from mum @therealbabybulmers, who visited the exhibition with her family.
We’ve included everything you need to know about Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience so you can decide whether it’s right for you and your little ones.
What is Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience?
Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience is a walk-through gallery featuring giant projected images and a VR exploration of Van Gogh’s most famous paintings.
The event has four main parts: the 360° digital show, a VR experience, an exhibit detailing the artist’s life, and a Studio where you can create your own artwork.
In the 360° digital show, there are projections of Van Gogh’s work that fill the room with light, video and sound. Each projection cycle lasts about 20-30 minutes.
The space holds benches and deckchairs, so you can relax here for as long as you like.
In the VR experience, you learn about the inspiration behind eight of Van Gogh’s most iconic works. Entry to this costs £3 and isn’t included in the price of a standard ticket.
The exhibit uses storytelling and props to teach visitors about Van Gogh’s life. Near the beginning, for example, there’s a recreation of his famous bedroom painting with real furniture.
At the end of the trail is the Studio, where children can create their own version of a Van Gogh painting.

What were the highlights of your Van Gogh visit?
We really enjoyed the immersive and theatrical nature of the exhibit. My kids loved the Studio room in particular, where they could colour in their own version of a Van Gogh painting.
Is the Van Gogh Immersive Exhibition worth it?
This event might be worth the regular ticket price (£19.90), so I would consider purchasing tickets at this price in the future.
What could have been better?
The only downside was that this experience wasn’t so suitable for younger kids. There were lots of steps and uneven levels, and the biographical aspect of the exhibition wasn’t fun for them.
How would you sum up the Van Gogh Immersive Exhibition?
I would say the Van Gogh Immersive Exhibition is best for children aged 6 years and over.

Virtual reality experience at Van Gogh
A Loopla team member also attended the Van Gogh experience and tried the virtual reality add-on. This is a 3D show that you view through virtual reality headsets and is sold at an extra cost of £3 per person. She had the following to share about the experience.
The virtual reality experience at Van Gogh was one of the highlights of the exhibition.
When you put the 3D headset on, you start to move through landscapes of fields, along streets, and into buildings, which are all from Van Gogh’s paintings or in the same style. You can look all around you, and everywhere, you see scenes from his paintings.
The thick brushstrokes he uses in paintings like The Starry Night come to life and move in swirls or waves, which has a beautiful effect.
I highly recommend the virtual reality experience as it is very immersive, and you feel like you have stepped inside one of Van Gogh’s paintings. It was an exhibition favourite for the children as well.
